Jessica specializes in Sports & Rehabilitative massage
As a massage therapist my goal is to promote and enhance the quality of life by using therapeutic massage to assist in the body's ability to heal and nurture itself. I have chosen massage as my median because I know it works, both from observation and from experience. In 1995 I was injured in an automobile accident and as a result, I endured more than a year of neck and back pain. Finally, after exhausting every other therapy, I discovered massage and immediately realized the possibility of healing. Through that healing I developed a keen interest in health and human anatomy, and throughout college I held part-time jobs as both a personal trainer and a physical therapy assistant.
Jessica follows the Crossfit training model, based on a broad, inclusive approach to Functional Fitness that includes weight lifting, metabolic conditioning, and basic gymnastic (pull-ups, push-ups, dips, etc.) movements.
While fitness and exercise has always been one of my personal passions, it was my massage work that reintroduced me to the idea of personal training others.
Time after time, I'd massage clients whose muscles were chronically tight, unbalanced, or underdeveloped. Most of the issues were due to postural habits, occupational stresses, over or under use of specific muscles, and sometimes poor nutritional habits. I knew that massage would only provide temporary relief for these clients, and that to achieve lasting results they would need to adopt a regular strengthening and/or flexibility program, which is what I urged most of them to do.
Along with encouragement, I passed on as much nutritional and exercise advice as my client's were willing to hear. I even incorporated stretching and specific exercises in our massage sessions, but was of course limited due to time and resources.
It wasn't long before I began to envision a career that incorporated both of my passions : massage and exercise. I realized that by combining my massage and personal training skills I would possess a distinct advantage in my effort to help clients achieve, and even exceed, their personal health and fitness goals.
Today, I am proud and excited to offer these services in a unique setting that was designed specifically with your health and comfort in mind.
Jessica's Yoga style combines various disciplines including Kundalini, Iyengar, and Pranayama, to offer a basic Hatha practice. Typical sessions focus on the development of full body strength, flexibility, balance, and deep breathing. While sessions always begin and end with breathing & relaxation, most of the class is a combination of deep stretches and a rather intense Vinyasa flow, often referred to as power yoga.
Yoga was really my first introduction to conscious health & fitness. Even before I discovered my affinity for weight lifting, I found myself attending my first yoga class, held on the first floor of an apartment building in my Wilmington nieghborhood. That was over 15 years ago. Since then I have studied under masterful teachers in the U.S. and abroad, and have practiced several disciplines including Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Hatha, and Vinyasa. As a student of yoga, I have benefited both physically and mentally (even spriritually) in ways that I believe have made me a better person. I have found that when I practice yoga regularly I simply feel better, more balanced.
As a personal trainer and massage therapist I found myself increasingly incorporating aspects of yoga philosophy and movement with my clients. Eventually I began leading yoga sessions with several of my training clients as a way to introduce their bodies and minds to the benefits of yoga. Those sessions were so well received that I was encouraged to begin offering personal & small group classes.
